European initiative to prevent illicit trade and trafficking of cultural goods

In the context of its efforts to step up the fight against financing of terrorism, the European Commission has presented a legislative proposal that will establish standards to certify the legality of imported cultural goods and incentivise importers to take precautions when buying from third countries. The proposed law is currently being discussed by the Members of the International Trade and Culture Committees of the European Parliament and should be adopted before the end of the year. The fight against illicit trade in cultural goods is a key European action in the course of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage.
